The Town Mayor

What Does the Mayor of Stotfold Actually Do?

It's a great question and one more people ask than you might think.

You've probably seen the Mayor at community events around town. Maybe you've spotted the chain of office and wondered what it's all about. So let's clear it up.
Stotfold has had a Town Mayor since 1974.

That's when Stotfold became a Town Council. With that came the right to elect a Mayor each year. They're a local person chosen by fellow councillors to lead and represent the town.
It's not a paid job. It's a voluntary role taken on by an elected councillor who puts their hand up to serve the community in a very visible way.

So what does the Mayor actually do?

They represent Stotfold at civic events. There are formal events throughout the year where town mayors are invited to attend alongside other civic leaders. Our Mayor is there, flying the flag for Stotfold.

They get out into the community.

From school visits to local fetes, the Mayor attends events across the town. They cut ribbons, say a few words, and most importantly, they listen. It's about being present and approachable.

They chair our Full Council meetings.

Every meeting of the full Town Council is chaired by the Mayor. They keep debate fair and focused, make sure every councillor has their say, and ensure decisions are made properly and transparently.

They are the civic spokesperson for the town.

When the council speaks formally to the press or to partner organisations, the Mayor is often the voice of Stotfold.

What the Mayor isn't.

The Mayor doesn't run the council day-to-day. That's the job of the Town Clerk and the council staff. They don't have extra voting powers. And they can't make decisions on their own.

Think of it less like a chief executive and more like a community champion with a very impressive piece of jewellery.

Who is our Mayor right now?

Our current Mayor is Cllr Jon Smith, Mayor of Stotfold 2025–26. He's supported by Deputy Mayor Cllr Jos Headington, who steps in to represent the town when needed.
Together they'll be out and about at events across Stotfold throughout the year, so do say hello if you see them!

We encourage any Stotfold residents to reach out and talk to us about any ideas they may have to improve our town at [email protected]

Mayor's Chosen Charities 2026 – 2027

The Mayor's Charity for 2026-27 is Henlow and Villages Community Responders. Community first responders are trained volunteers, dispatched by North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to emergencies in their local communities.

This year we are supporting our local group who are often first on the scene at medical incidents in Stotfold.
